Off the Planet

I fell off the planet... honestly... and it hurt :) ...or maybe I simply went into hibernation for the Wisconsin winter. This seems to be a better explanation... although I am not sure we could call that a legitimate winter.

Regardless, this post is the beginning of my pledge to join the technological world again.

Goal for the week: create 4 blog posts by SaturdayApril 28th...

This is the extent of my first post... I have to get my run in.

Happy Earth Day.

Bring it on Angela!!!!

Today Northeast Wisconsin is getting hit with its first snowfall of the season. I am sooooooo excited.  I have been waiting for this since November. I don't think anyone who lives in Wisconsin expects to make it through December without snow, but we did and it was 51 degrees yesterday.

So you are probably wondering "who is Angela?" A local weather station names each significant snowstorm of the year... They start with the beginning of the alphabet and each storm thereafter gets the next letter... This is the first storm of the season so it starts with an "A". I think this makes it easy for them to keep track of the number of significant snowstorms we have each year.

I have the day off of work tomorrow so I am hoping to enjoy the snow with two runs and maybe some sledding in between :) I feel like a little kid again because it has been so long since I have seen this much snow. (This is my first Wisconsin winter in 7 years!)

Thanks for the change of scenery "Angela" .... I am not so sure I will be this excited if "Henry"or "Jennifer" show up later this year :)

I will post pictures of the winter wonderland later....

Birthday Reflection

Today would be my Mom's 65th birthday. Days that have meaning like this always make me a little sad that she is not here. The month of December is full of them: Mom's birthday, Christmas, and Dad's Birthday (my father passed away when I was 10).

Thinking about their lives and their deaths always gives me an additional motivation to run and remain active. Both of my parents passed away (at very young ages) because of heart disease. I run because I enjoy it, but most importantly I run because I am determined to fight back against heart disease that claimed the lives of two of the most important people in my life. I miss them everyday and I am so thankful for what they were able to do for me while they were here. Even though their lives were short I see both of them in myself:

  • I am a fighter/competitor (and sometimes a little stubborn) just like my dad.
  • I am a slight pushover when it comes to family and friends and I never want to hurt anyone's feelings just like my mom.
I am grateful because I know I am me because of them. I will keep running and keep fighting back against heart disease in their honor!

Stay Healthy,

Miche

The Little Things

I feel like now that the holidays are upon us this is the time when I forget about the little things. I forget to hydrate properly, I forget to stretch, or I just do not have time to use the foam roller. I get so caught up in watching holiday movies, decorating, baking, and visiting with family that I let the little things go by the wayside and simply "just get through" the mileage.

The idea behind this post is to outline a few things I really want to be diligent about until the end of the year. That way I can check back here occasionally and evaluate how I am doing.

  • Proper Hydration
  • 15-20 minutes of stretching after each run (I have never spent a lot of time stretching so this amount is a big goal for me ) :)
  • Recovery from long runs and workouts, including recovery drinks, naps, and stretching.
  • Update my training log! I use an online training log and have been terrible about keeping it up to date.
  • Foam roller and core work 2-3 times each week.
I love the holidays and I love running this time of year. I love running around the neighborhood at dusk and checking out everyone's holiday decorations. I am excited for everything to come as we finish out the year and start a new one before we know it!

One final note... the Green Bay Packers are 11-0. Therefore, I am one happy cheesehead!

Keep Running,

Miche

Making a Plan and Getting After It...

For the past two weeks I have had pretty low mileage (especially compared to what is to come over the next four weeks). I got back into doing longer workouts though and it felt good to get my flats on and push the pace a little bit.

I have finally found a race that I want to do. I have not been in a competitive race since spring of 2010 so I am already nervous even though the race is 5 weeks away. I have not decided whether it will be a half marathon or full in my future for October, but I really need to decide soon.

The next four weeks will be full of a lot of mileage and some longer workouts. I feel more fit nearly everyday so I am hoping to make a lot of progress over this next 4 week block. I will keep you posted with how each week is progressing!

Welcome

Now that I have finished school and am taking a little time before I jump into the real world with a full time job and responsibilities I find myself with A LOT of extra time on my hands. I figured I might as well start a blog and use up a little of that extra time :)

This blog will focus mainly on running and racing. I have been running for about 8 years now and I still love it. I will not go as far as to say that I am motivated everyday to get out the door and run, but when I am out there I enjoy it. I started running in high school and was fortunate enough to get to compete in college. Now that I am done competing collegiately I am trying to continue running to see how good I can be. I want to run my first marathon by the end of the year so we will see how this training progresses!

I finished competing collegiately in the spring of 2010 and have been a little bit lost training-wise since then. I have had good months and bad months and just wasn't able to string together a solid time for training. I recently moved back to my hometown to hopefully rediscover that motivation for training and take running to the next level.

I have a wonderful boyfriend who works 50+ hours a week so that I can work part-time at a running store (which I absolutely love by the way) and train full-time. I have lost both of my parents to heart disease and so I don't run just for the competition but rather for the healthy lifestyle.

I am a pretty boring person and so the running lifestyle fits with me very well. I love to eat... and so big mileage weeks are my justification for over-eating :) ... that is really all I have to say for my introduction...

Happy Running :)
